Joseph Hara was born in the village of Kapeta in Malawi‘s Rumphi District. He speaks his native language Tumbuka, the Malawian national language Chichewa, and the international language English. As a young man Joseph worked as a farm manager while he studied at the Baptist Theological Seminary. In 1994 he became pastor of the River Jordan Baptist Church. He and his wife Jessie have eight children. “I became involved in ministry because so many people did not know the way of salvation,” Joseph recalls. “I soon realized that the Gospel message was more than preaching salvation. Many people did not know the way out of poverty.” With this vision Joseph and Jessie Hara began ministering to the hearts and souls of the people in their community – addressing both spiritual poverty and physical poverty.
